Notice to Contributors

Etude de la Population Africaine /African Population Studiesis a bilingual journal (French and English) published twice a year in April and October by the Union for African Population Studies. It publishes dependable and timely information emanating from original research on African population, development and related fields. Papers are invited from researchers and others working in the population field. All articles submitted are reviewed anonymously by at least two experts in the field. Submissions can take various forms as follows:

Regular Articles present and discuss original research within any area of population. The maximum length is 25 double-spaced pages including references, tables and figures. Tables and Figures should not be more than 5 or 6.

Policy Papers report research relevant to policy-making in various aspects of population. Policy reports should not be more than 20 double-spaced pages.

Short Commentaries about completed or on-going research projects on a subject of interest in the population field should be between 8 to 10 double-spaced pages.

Letters to the Editor and Comments usually on a paper published in the journal or on issues highly relevant to African population are welcome. These are subject to editorial review before publication.

Book Reviews are encouraged. Prospective reviewers should obtain detailed guidelines from the editors. Publishers are encouraged to submit books for review. Books for review in English should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief, Clifford O. Odimegwu, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Books for review in French should be sent to the Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Parfait Eloundou-Enyegue, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.

Advertising in the journal is accepted subject to editorial approval. Rates can be obtained from the Editor.

Preparation of Manuscripts

1. The first page should contain the title of paper, author's name, institutional affiliation and address for correspondence including telephone, fax and e-mail details. In the case of joint authorship, authors should indicate which of them should receive correspondences from the editorial office. Otherwise, the office will consider the first name of the list. Apart from the title, no other page should have authors' names or institutional affiliations embedded.
2. The second page should contain the title of the paper, an abstract of not more than 150 words, and five (5) keywords. The abstract must be presented in both English and French.
3. All authors should prepare their papers according to the following sub-headings: (1) Abstract (English and French versions), (2) Introduction, (3) Literature Review and Theoretical Framework, (4) Data and Methods, (5) Results, (6) Discussion, (7) Conclusion, which must include implications of the findings (policy, programme and research).
4. All copies must be typed one‑sided, double-spaced (including abstract, captions, notes and references) on A-4 paper with left and right margins of 3.75 cm and Times Roman Font of 12. For papers submitted in English, spelling should be according to the Oxford English Dictionary.
5. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet and identified by a short descriptive title immediately above the table. Except for papers in French, tables should contain no vertical lines. Tables should be numbered consecutively and in the order in which they are referred to in the text. The position of the table should be indicated on the right margin.
6. Footnotes should appear as "Notes" at the end of articles. They should be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet and numbered consecutively throughout the text.
7. All illustrative material, drawings, maps, diagrams and photographs should appear as figures, each with a short title placed immediately below it. Each figure should be on a separate page and must be submitted in a form suitable for reduction and publication without redrawing.
8. References: The Harvard-style will be followed. Quotations in the text should be followed by the author's surname and the year of publication. For a direct quote, the page number should be included, e.g. (Lututala 1995: 81). The list of references in the text should be typed double-spaced and placed after the text and notes in the following format:

9. If a paper is accepted for publication, the author(s) will be required to submit a revised copy with a statement outlining how the author(s) responded to the reviewers' comments. Original copies of all figures will be required.

10. Galley proof of manuscripts will be sent to author(s) for final proofreading. This should be returned to the Editor within one week.

11. Authors will receive two complimentary copies of the issue in which their articles appear together with ten off prints.

12. Manuscripts not accepted for publication will not be returned to authors.

Submission of Manuscripts

Two electronic copies of each article should be submitted, one to the editor and one to the Secretariat. Contributions are accepted on the understanding that the authors have obtained the necessary authority for publication. Unless otherwise stated, submission of a paper will be held to imply that it contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere. A submission to the journal is taken on the grounds that the article has not been published elsewhere and that it is not being considered for publication by another journal.

Etude de la Population Africaine/African Population Studies est une revue bilingue (Anglais et Françs) publiédeux fois l'an, en avril et en octobre, par l'Union pour l'Etude de la Population Africaine. Elle publie des informations fiables et opportunes tiré de recherches originales sur la population, le déloppement et les domaines connexes. Les chercheurs et autres travaillant dans le domaine de la population sont invitéàrénter des articles. Tous les articles soumis àa revue font l'objet d'une revue anonyme par deux experts dans le domaine. Les soumissions peuvent prendre l'une des formes suivantes :

Les articles classiquespréntent et déttent des recherches originales relatives à'un ou l'autre des sous-secteurs de la population. La longueur maximum est de 25 pages àouble interligne y compris les rérences, les tableaux et les figures. Ces derniers (tableaux et figures) ne doivent pas désser 6.

Les analyses/éluations des programmes et politiques de population sont des rapports de recherche pouvant êe utilisé dans l'éboration des politiques gérales des divers aspects de la population. Ces derniers ne doivent pas désser 20 pages àouble interligne.

Les notes ou documents sur des projets de recherche achevéou en cours, portant sur un sujet d'intét dans le domaine de la population, doivent avoir entre 8 et 10 pages àouble interligne.

Les lettres aux éteurs et commentairesportent habituellement sur un article publiéans la revue ou sur des questions éoitement lié àa Population Africaine. Fortement encouragé ils sont examinépar la réction avant publication.

Les revues d'ouvragessont encouragé. Des orientations préses doivent êe fournies par la réction aux critiques potentiels. Les maisons d'étion sont encouragé àoumettre des livres pour examen.
